Few watches capture the essence of Rolex’s tool-watch heritage quite like the Explorer II. Originally developed in for cave explorers in 1971, it allows the wearer to distinguish between day and night, while remaining highly legible and extremely robust. The 40mm Oyster case has a predominantly sporty, brushed finish, with polished edges adding and element of luxury, and a screw-down crown offering 100m of water resistance. The 16550 is considered a transitional reference, having only been produced for a few years, and as such, this rare 1989 watch is thought to be one of the later versions, fitted with features from its successor, the reference 16570. Earlier examples of the reference 16550 can be found with “cream” dials, a result of the white paint discolouring. These dials can also be distinguished by the white gold surrounds around the Tritium hour markers. Noticing the defect, Rolex created an upgraded dial to fit into the new reference 16570, and it is thought that a small run of the 16550 were also fitted with these dials, as can be seen here. The polar white remains glossy and crisp, and the hour markers now have black surrounds, however the markers and hands are still filled with Tritium and as such, have an even pumpkin-colour patina. One other difference to note is the later bezel with its straight “2” and slightly thicker font, which has become another point of interest for collectors, adding further depth to this already fascinating reference. Fitted to the watch is a steel Oyster bracelet. Understood to be a service bracelet from 1995, it feels reassuringly secure and is fitted with a micro adjustment on the clasp and diver’s extension. Powering the watch is the Rolex calibre 3085 automatic movement. An improvement on the previous movement, it features a hacking seconds, a Quickset function for the date, and, more importantly, an independent GMT hand. For those local to Kent such as we are, it was a delight to see that this watch was originally sold through Farrers of Tunbridge Wells, in 1989. Offered as a full set, this includes the original wooden presentation box and cushion, outer box, guarantee certificate, chronometer booklet, Oyster and Explorer booklets, Rolex service guarantee, and swing tag. The watch was serviced by Rolex UK in February 2008 and has since been tested and found to be running well, and ss such, we are pleased to provide a 6-month warranty. This interesting reference 16550 is an ideal piece for those who enjoy a practical sports watch, while also appreciating the subtle details found throughout Rolex’s production history.

Pumpkin Patina
Lume plots that have aged to a distinct orange or pumpkin-like color.
Nipple Dial
The "nipple dial" is a term used to describe a specific type of dial found on certain vintage Rolex watches, particularly the Rolex GMT-Master and Submariner models from the 1970s and 1980s. The distinguishing feature of a nipple dial is its hour markers: instead of the usual flat or applied markers, these dials have raised, gold-trimmed markers that resemble small "nipples." These markers are typically made of gold and are filled with luminous material, allowing them to be easily read in low-light conditions. The nipple dial is considered highly desirable among collectors due to its distinctive look and its association with vintage Rolex models.
Frog Foot
Crown resembling a frog's foot.
