The Rolex Explorer II ref. Ref. 16550 with a white dial is one of Rolex's most recognizable vintage sports wristwatches. From the 1980s, this piece, known to enthusiasts as the "Pannone," represents the small percentage of watches produced with a white dial, which developed a creamy hue, making it extremely rare. Introduced in 1985, the ref. 16550 was a transitional model of the Explorer II, with a short production run of approximately four years. The reference features applied polished white gold indexes with luminescence. Unlike those most commonly seen on the market, this piece features a "cream" dial from around 1985/86 and displays the typical characteristics of the transitional period, a year and a half before the reference was completely phased out, with the indexes featuring an intriguing dark outline. Featuring an equally striking, even patina with "rail" graphics, it is in excellent condition and comes with its set. Lot 9 is a “must have” from our Padel & Paddle auction.

Pumpkin Patina
Lume plots that have aged to a distinct orange or pumpkin-like color.
Nipple Dial
The "nipple dial" is a term used to describe a specific type of dial found on certain vintage Rolex watches, particularly the Rolex GMT-Master and Submariner models from the 1970s and 1980s. The distinguishing feature of a nipple dial is its hour markers: instead of the usual flat or applied markers, these dials have raised, gold-trimmed markers that resemble small "nipples." These markers are typically made of gold and are filled with luminous material, allowing them to be easily read in low-light conditions. The nipple dial is considered highly desirable among collectors due to its distinctive look and its association with vintage Rolex models.
Frog Foot
Crown resembling a frog's foot.
