--> Description Explorer II ref 16550 ‘Chicchi di Mais’ in steel with original box and guarantee, circa 1987 Rolex Brand: Rolex Model: Explorer II "Chicchi di Mais" Year: circa 1987 Reference: 16550 Dial: White Tritium Case No.: R.279.340 Movement: Automatic Cal: 3085 Material: Steel Bracelet: Steel Oyster Size: 39 mm Accessories: Box and guarantee --> More information Rolex's Explorer II Reference 16550 replaced the much-loved Reference 1655, which was a modernised version of the brand's historic Explorer wristwatch line. The unique design was originally intended for speleologists with a fixed, engraved bezel calibrated to 24 hours and an additional 24-hour hand that allows the wearer to easily know the exact time by distinguishing between day and night. Reference 16550 was a milestone. Introduced in 1985, it was the first Rolex model equipped with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Produced for only a few years, specimens with a white dial became a collector's favourite as the contrast with the yellowed triads is more striking; this type of dial was nicknamed ‘Corn Beans’ by collectors. This watch has been preserved in excellent condition and is still accompanied by its original set including box and guarantee.

Pumpkin Patina
Lume plots that have aged to a distinct orange or pumpkin-like color.
Nipple Dial
The "nipple dial" is a term used to describe a specific type of dial found on certain vintage Rolex watches, particularly the Rolex GMT-Master and Submariner models from the 1970s and 1980s. The distinguishing feature of a nipple dial is its hour markers: instead of the usual flat or applied markers, these dials have raised, gold-trimmed markers that resemble small "nipples." These markers are typically made of gold and are filled with luminous material, allowing them to be easily read in low-light conditions. The nipple dial is considered highly desirable among collectors due to its distinctive look and its association with vintage Rolex models.
Frog Foot
