It is said that the name "Thunderbird" became established as marketing promoted it as a commemorative model for Colonel Don Ferris, commander of the U.S. Air Force aerobatic team, the Thunderbirds. This generation, featuring the first use of a sapphire crystal and the Cal. 3135 movement, was manufactured from around 1988 to 2004.
