During saturation diving, divers breathe a gas mixture rich in helium; due to the minute size of its atoms, helium is able to penetrate a watch case under pressure. Upon decompression during ascent, this trapped gas can generate excessive internal pressure, potentially compromising the integrity of the timepiece. To address this challenge, Rolex engineered the Sea-Dweller with a helium escape valve, an innovative safety feature that automatically opens when internal pressure reaches a critical level, allowing helium to safely exit the case and protecting the watch during decompression.
