Roger Dubuis, from Classical to Extravagant Watchmaker The Geneva manufacturer Roger Dubuis was founded in 1995, following the meeting of watchmaker Roger Dubuis (1938-2017) and entrepreneur-designer Carlos Dias. From the start of its activities, it has specialized in the field of fine watchmaking by combining excellence and hyper-performance. Born in 1938 in Geneva, Switzerland, Roger Dubuis developed an early passion for watchmaking and began his career in the sector at an early age. In 1999, after four years of development, the 100% integrated manufacture presented its first movements designed and developed in-house, all certified “Poinçon de Genève”, one of the most demanding signatures in the watch industry. Determined to give himself the means to achieve his ambitions, Roger Dubuis opened his production workshops two years later in Meyrin at the gates of Geneva. In 2005, Roger Dubuis unveiled a series of innovations. The iconic “Excalibur” collection is launched and the Manufacture develops two new exclusive calibres: the first open-worked double tourbillon, “Calibre RD 01SQ” and the tourbillon with minute-repeater, “Calibre RD 08”. In 2008, the brand was bought by the Richemont Group. Under the direction of the latter, Roger Dubuis continues to develop its international presence and to present new collections of innovative watches. The manufacture continues to make an impact through various innovations, notably with the introduction of the in-house “Calibre RD 101”. Presented for the first time at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in 2013, this calibre is the first mechanical movement in the world equipped with four balance wheels connected by five differentials and presented in a silicon case, a world first. In 2015, Roger Dubuis reaffirmed its leading position in the field of contemporary skeleton watches with the launch of the “Excalibur Spider Skeleton”. The following year, in 2016, the house focused its attention on two flagship collections. The “Excalibur” collection is characterized by a powerful aesthetic and exceptional mechanisms, deliberately extravagant, these timepieces push the boundaries of traditional watchmaking thanks to avant-garde design. At the same time, the “Velvet” collection is defined by a glamorous design and highly complicated mechanisms. Contemporary and attractive, this collection has a unique character that cultivates the art of extravagance. In his quest for hyper-performance, Roger Dubuis announced in 2018 his partnership with two legendary institutions in the automotive world: Pirelli and Lamborghini Squadra Corse. From these collaborations are born the “Excalibur Spider Pirelli” and the “Excalibur Aventador S”, followed by the “Excalibur Huracán”. The House continues to strengthen its place in the automotive world by becoming the official sponsor of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo and the official timekeeper of the legendary Goodwood Festival of Speed. In 2020, the Excalibur collection is redesigned in a more contemporary way, as evidenced by the emblematic timepieces in the “Monotourbillon”, “Double Tourbillon” and “Monobalancier” versions. Bold and avant-garde, the brand stands out for its use of innovative materials such as black ceramic, known to be difficult to tame because it is four times harder than stainless steel or even Damascus titanium. Twice as light as steel and 30% more resistant, this material creates an unparalleled aesthetic as well as a feeling of lightness on the wrist. The brand has also forged renowned partnerships in the world of motor racing and luxury jewellery, to create special editions and unique watches. These collaborations allowed Roger Dubuis to further stand out in the luxury watch market. Roger Dubuis himself was recognized for his innovative spirit and attention to detail. He has received several awards for his contributions to Swiss horology, including the prestigious title of “Master Watchmaker” awarded by the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG). Today, the Roger Dubuis brand is still active and offers a wide range of luxury watches, from classic and elegant models to contemporary and avant-garde designs. Roger Dubuis watches continue to embody Swiss watchmaking excellence and are highly valued by collectors and watch enthusiasts around the world. -- Key dates
