While the Porsche name might be best known for their incredible cars, Porsche’s design studio Porsche Design have an impressively long history in watchmaking too which goes as far back as the 1970s when they kicked things off with a collaboration between themselves and Orfina in 1972 that resulted in the Chronograph 1. By 1977, Porsche Design had split from Orfina and decided to begin collaborating with IWC, which created a bevy of iconic timepieces, one of which being the Titan that we have here. Launched in 1980, the Titan was one of the earliest titanium timepieces offered on the market, which aided Porsche Design’s reputation as a watchmaker whom specialised in interesting watches that utilised designs and materials outside of the realm of normalcy for watchmakers. Twice as hard to machine, eight times more expensive and half the weight of steel, Porsche Design was so proud of the Titan’s titanium roots that they inscribed the model’s name on the endlink of its integrated titanium bracelet at 6 o’clock. Offered with a black dial and powered by the automatic IWC cal. 7912 movement, the 42mm Titan is a chronograph with a day and date indicator, as IWC made popular in their pilots watches, so that the utility of its construction is brought through in the utility of its functions. A robust tool watch with a rich history as one of Porsche Design’s crown jewels at the time, the Titan is an interesting timepiece that any IWC collector would be proud to own. THE DIAL Identifiable as a later example due to its omission of IWC branding on its black dial, this Titan is proud of its heritage as a watch from Porsche Design. THE CONSTRUCTION Boasting a sandblasted 42mm titanium construction, the Titan is lighter on the wrist than one might imagine, and with its sandblasted texture its dull appearance adds a toolish aesthetic that tones down its unique design.
