A total of 32 examples in yellow gold are known of which less than half are fitted with cloisonne enamel dials. These enamel dials depict maps or other themes such as dragons, Poseidon, compasses, globes or even zodiac signs. The most commonly found are those that illustrate North America, the firms biggest market at the time of production. The present examples is one of the rarest examples and proudly displays the “Ancient World”, a term used to describe the four continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. Fresh to the market, the present example is preserved in a wonderful state of condition and is featured on the cover of the book, Patek Philippe, My Dream Collection by Ali Neal. Made in 1948 and sold in 1954 the watch was originally sold with a retail price of 2,250 Sfr. The dial was manufactured by Stern Freres, the case made by Wenger and its movement is based on the calibre 17”70, the best quality movement at the time. Louis Cottier developed the world time and first presented it to Patek Philippe in 1937 with his first watches being delivered two years later.
