Remark: Approx. 160 pieces madeIn the height of the American gilded age, Patek Philippe was commissioned by their luxury partners to create highly complicated watches to fit the demand and discerning tastes of their wealthiest patrons. To the best of our knowledge, approximately 160 split second, minute repeating chronographs were commissioned, with nearly half of this production made exclusively for the US market from 1870. Many of these complication watches were co-signed by prestigious retailers such as the presented lot, signed for Shreve & Co. Dating back to 1852, Shreve & Co remains one of the oldest retail jewelers in the state of California still in operation today.
The present lot is monogrammed and personally inscribed for Mr. Emory Winship the 5th, gifted by his first wife on the occasion of their marriage on 3 November 1904. Mr Winship was a decorated naval officer and San Francisco capitalist. The Winships are a prominent American family with history dating back to 1635 and were historically prolific in manufacturing, Pacific trade, and philanthropy. The Winship family's legacy continues to be recognized today through various institutions including the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University, named in honor of Emily Winship Woodruff, the wife of Robert Winship Woodruff. We are pleased to offer the present lot directly from the family of the original owner.
