Further delivered with the Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming the date of manufacture of the present timepiece in 1994 with an opaline silvered dial, applied white gold Breguet numerals, beaded minute circle and its subsequent date of sale on 27th October 1994 One of the great classics of Grand Complications made by Patek Philippe, the ref. 5016 unites in its Calatrava-style case three of the complications most revered by devotees of exceptional timepieces: the tourbillon, the minute repeater and the perpetual calendar with moon phases display. Released in 1993, the ref. 5016 was the most complicated watch produced by the firm until they released the Sky Moon Tourbillon ref. 5002 in 2001.
Produced in yellow gold, white gold, pink gold, as well as platinum (present example), it is believed that approximately 90 examples of the ref. 5016 in platinum were manufactured until production ended in 2011. Drawing inspiration from the legendary ref. 2499, the case proportions exude restrained refinement. Fitted with either silvered or black dials, each bearing an individual movement number printed below the moon phase to echo observatory chronometer pocket watches of the past. A beautifully executed tourbillon visible through the sapphire caseback captivates the eye with its unique wheel shaped like a watchmaker's tool.
Apart from its aesthetic appeal, when it comes to Patek Philippe minute repeater cases, none is more prestigious than ones bearing the “JHP” makers mark - crisply preserved underneath the lower right lug of the present watch. Collectors can be assured of the sublime chimes that come from a Jean-Pierre Hagmann case, made only for early productions of the ref. 5016. According to our research, only a handful of this reference with a Hagmann case in platinum have appeared at auction. Bearing movement number 1’950’010, the present timepiece is the 11th example produced by the manufacturer, as the production of this reference began with movement number 1’950’000.
Most interestingly, the watch is accompanied with a previously unknown grey Roman numerals dial – the only known example of this configuration that have appeared on the market. It is speculated that a previous owner purchased this dial from a collector who ordered this special dial as an additional dial for their ref. 5016 with movement number 1’950’068. Commissioned dials are exceptionally rare and made only at the request of Patek Philippe’s most important clients.
Undeniably elegant and understated, this platinum ref. 5016 has been kept in the same collection since 2009.
