Nautilus White Gold 5711G-001 2007 Box and Papers
A rather dressy example of the Nautilus, featuring a monochromatic grey dial and case combo. It's paired with an alligator leather strap, making it a more subtle and under-the-radar alternative to the striking blue dial of the steel version. This particular Nautilus was sold in Bath in 2007, and comes complete with the box, booklets, hang tag and dated certificate of origin.\n\nAlthough it's perhaps the single hardest watch to get at retail nowadays, Patek Philippe's Nautilus came as a surprise to the industry when it initially launched. Alongside the more aggressive and angular Royal Oak from Audemars Piguet, the Nautilus has the illustrious title of being a watch that arguably saved the Swiss watch industry from its darkest times. \n\nIn the 1970s, the industry was being outwitted by Japanese quartz watch manufacturers, who produced watches which were not only far more accurate, but also vastly cheaper than their Swiss counterparts. To stymie this decline, watchmakers looked to radically change the nature of the industry. The Royal Oak and Nautilus were infamous for costing over 10 times more than contemporary steel watches, and yet it took a few years for the first references to actually sell out. \n\nToday, the Nautilus is iconic in every sense of the word. While the watch has become immensely popular as a result of pop culture, it still holds its own as piece of horological history.
