First released in the 1970s, the Nautilus, designed by none other than Gerald Genta himself, was a crazy, avant-garde sports watch in stainless steel that sold for an eye-watering price. While the Royal Oak was designed in this same sense, Audemars Piguet was largely seen as the bad boys of the industry, and when Patek Philippe followed suit, clients and critics alike who were used to seeing elegant dress watches were shocked to see that they followed in AP’s footsteps. The reference 3700 ‘Jumbo’, the first Nautilus model ever made, of course, as we know, managed to defy the odds and today is one of the holy grails of vintage Patek Philippe collecting. In today’s market, you'll find a myriad of Nautilus models featuring a variety of complications—from chronographs to annual calendars to dual-time complications, there's something for every collector. This particular reference, the 5990R in 18-carat rose gold, is the superlative successor to the 5980 and combines a chronograph with a dual time zone complication. It effectively merges the functional features of both the 5960 and the 5164A Aquanaut, resulting in an exceptionally versatile, practical, and visually striking timepiece that perfectly exemplifies the appeal of the 5990R. First introduced in 2014 in steel, the Ref. 5990 is arguably the most versatile Nautilus variant to date, thanks to the impressive array of features integrated into a single, compelling package. In 2021, Patek Philippe released what you see here today, the 5990R. At first glance, the dial may appear busy, but its elements are intentionally arranged in a beautifully symmetrical layout that remains both legible and balanced. Day/night indicators are positioned on either side of the dial, complemented by a date display at 12:00—easily adjusted via a hidden corrector at 1:00—and a 60-minute chronograph totalizer at 6:00. As shown in the photos, the 5990R stays true to the original Nautilus DNA, featuring the signature ridged dial, gold-applied luminous baton hour markers, and a subtle yet refined sunburst blue backdrop. Measuring 40.5mm x 12.53mm, its size is perfectly suited for a sport-oriented reference like the 5990R, with a slightly more commanding presence on the wrist, thanks to its exceptionally crafted integrated bracelet. Despite this, the 5990R retains impressive versatility and can be worn effortlessly in a variety of settings. As expected from Patek Philippe, the case is meticulously constructed and flawlessly finished from every angle. A particularly clever design element is the discreet integration of the pushers—used to adjust the dual time zone function, indicated by the skeletonised hour hand—into the left side of the case. This thoughtful placement exemplifies Patek Philippe's attention to detail, utilizing every inch of the case to enhance both form and function. That said, though its aesthetic may appear complex, the 5990R is surprisingly straightforward and intuitive to operate. Powering the 5990R and nestled beneath an exhibition caseback is the in-house Cal. CH 28-520 C FUS. It is a column-wheel vertical clutch flyback chronograph movement that features 34 jewels, 370 parts, and a Gyromax balance. Needless to say, the movement is finished to the highest standards, with remarkable perlage on its baseplate and circular Côtes de Genève (Geneva Striping) on its chamfered bridges, as well as a 21-carat gold winding rotor. In terms of power reserve, the movement can hold a charge for up to 55 hours when fully wound. The Patek Philippe Nautilus truly represents the pinnacle of the luxury sports watch, blending brutalist design elements with an elegant profile and near-perfect sizing. It’s easy to see why the Nautilus has epitomised the elegant sports watch archetype since its debut in the ‘70s. Ultimately, the Nautilus remains one of the most refined and iconic timepieces of our era, and we believe the demand for these watches will only continue to grow in the years to come.
