The present reference 5100 stood out in particular with its gorgeous case design deeply rooted in the company’s history, and with its groundbreaking 10-day movement. - The intriguing case design is inspired by the historical reference 2442, nicknamed “Manta Ray” for its dramatically flared case bands that resemble the giant, charismatic sea creature. Encased in yellow gold, pink gold, white gold and platinum, the reference 5100 was released as limited editions in different quantities for each case material. With 1500 examples produced in yellow gold with silvered dial, 750 examples in pink gold with anthracite dial, 450 examples in white gold with blue dial, and the rarest of all, 300 examples in platinum with black dial. The present example in platinum is arguably the most desirable and sought-after of all. - The 10-day movement was also a remarkable horological feat in the year 2000. The power reserve is driven by two mainspring barrels on the rectangular caliber 28-20/220 proudly displayed through the transparent case back, and this was the first time in the history of watchmaking for a wristwatch to feature a 10-day power reserve, which is indicated at the 12 o’clock on the dial. - Preserved in excellent overall condition, the present Patek Philippe reference 5100P is accompanied by a fitted presentation box, and further delivered with Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present piece in 1998. It will certainly appeal to collectors of important mechanical marvels.
