Patek Philippe
Chronograph, Black Dial, White Gold
A ref. 5170G-010, the white gold, black dial variant of Patek Philippe’s first fully in-house, non-split seconds chronograph. The 5170 replaced the Lemania based 5070 in response to greater emphasis being placed on in house movement design and manufacture. Instead of merely replicating the Lemania 2310 the brand relied upon previously, Patek Philippe launched a 5 year design effort that led to 6 separate patents in the release of the 5170’s calibre CH 29-535 PS. The opaline dial configuration, one of two offered in white gold, features oversized applied Breguet numerals offering a cleaner aesthetic while maintaining clear ties to the brand’s mid-century chronograph references. While visually the watch feels vintage-inspired it is on the cutting edge of movement technology, a fitting dichotomy for a monumental reference within such a storied brand.
The 5170 is Patek Philippe’s first fully in-house, non-split seconds chronograph. In the early 2000’s, consumers began emphasizing in-house movement design and manufacture over the previously commonplace ébauche utilization. The successor to the Lemania based 5070, the 5170 aimed to prove the brand’s abilities in this aspect of horology. Instead of merely replicating the Lemania 2310 the brand relied upon previously, Patek Philippe launched a 5 year design effort that led to 6 separate patents in the release of the 5170’s calibre CH 29-535 PS.
The 5170 was first released in yellow gold in 2010 followed by white gold, rose gold, and platinum. Its design references aesthetics first seen in Patek Philippe’s mid-century chronographs. The case shape feels a modern blend of ref. 130 and 1463 in 39.4mm, a significant decrease from the 42mm 5070. Just as with those early chronographs, multiple dial variants are on offer with each case metal sporting its own configuration. All have ties to variants of the mid-century references. The 5170G with its white gold case has two variants, a white dial with pulsations scale, or this cleaner black opaline dial with applied white gold oversized Breguet numerals.
The 5170 debuted Patek Philippe’s first in-house non-split seconds chronograph calibre. The CH 29-535 PS is a manually wound column wheel chronograph movement, replacing the lemania ébauche used in the 5070. The design effort took 5 years and resulted in 6 separate patents for mechanical solutions aimed at improving adjustability, efficiency, durability, and accuracy. It includes an instantaneous 30 minute counter in which the hand advances within a fraction of a second, allowing a clearer display of the counter. It boasts a 65 hour power reserve and hacking seconds. The movement is finished to Patek Seal standard, displaying beautiful Geneva striping, perlage, and anglage.

The 5170 brings Patek Philippe’s manually wound chronograph line into the modern era both through its design and proportions as well as the technical advancements of its in-house movement. The watch tastefully builds upon historical references creating an incredibly balanced contemporary chronograph. This black dial, white gold variant is the reference’s most restrained configuration, the monochrome palate and clean dial create a striking and austere aesthetic that feels simple yet dramatic. While visually the watch feels vintage-inspired it is on the cutting edge of movement technology, a fitting dichotomy for a monumental reference within such a storied brand.
