Replacing the earlier reference 5070 (which was fitted with Patek Philippe’s last Lemania-based caliber, CH 27-70), the new movement took five years to develop and incorporated six innovative patents, all while preserving the traditional column-wheel architecture. The ref. 5170 features a refined Calatrava-style case measuring a comfortable 39.5 mm in diameter, compared to the larger 42 mm case of its predecessor. The present example is cased in yellow gold and notably fitted with a pulsometer scale on the dial — a charming nod to doctor’s watches of the 1940s that lends the piece a touch of vintage character. Despite its reduced practicality, the ref. 5170 remains a timeless classic distinguished by its excellent legibility, elegant proportions, and versatile appeal suitable for both formal and casual wear.
