The reference 5070J-001 was launched in 1998 and it represented Patek Philippe's long waited return to production of chronograph-only watches since the last chronograph model reference 1463 production was halted in the late 1960s. It is believed that the reference 5070 production was limited to 250 piece per year in each metal. It was in production for a relatively short time up until approximately 2010.
The present example is a rare yellow gold reference 5070J-001 with a black dial, inspired by the design of reference 2512, a split-seconds chronograph wristwatch from the early 1950s that is currently housed in the Patek Philippe museum. The yellow gold reference 5070J-001 was only produced between 1998-2002 so it is believed that only 1000 pieces have been produced in yellow gold. The timepiece is also fitted with the Calibre CH 27-70, a Lemania based movement.
