1960 Patek Philippe Ref. 2598 Retailed By Beyer With Box and Papers

Why This Watch Matters This Patek Calatrava ref. 2598 retailed by Beyer turns 61 years old today, on the day of listing. The Full Story Beyer was founded in 1760 and is considered the oldest watch shop in Switzerland, and possibly the world. The store has been owned and operated by the Beyer family for over eight generations. A longtime partner with Patek Philippe, Beyer's relationship with the Calatrava Cross dates back to around 1842, and the oldest Patek found within the Beyer museum dates to 1899. The retailer's 20th century relationship with Patek Philippe is maybe best represented by the collection of Talking Watches alum René Beyer . The Patek ref. 2598 we have here is an excellent example of the relationship between these two Swiss icons. In a smartly styled round case with faceted lugs and the classic Calatrava layout with a sub-seconds register at six o'clock, the ref. 2598 is a perfect Beyer-signed Patek to add to any collection. If history to pair with Beyer's roots is what you're after, there's no more legendary wristwatch in the Patek lineup than the Calatrava. Beyond the story, the object itself is simply stunning and with a full set, box and papers, confirming the original point of sale at Beyer – this watch is really special. Always nice to have, this Beyer-signed Patek is brought to the next level by all the proper accoutrements. The watch comes with its sleek vintage red Patek presentation box. It's also retained its original papers signed "Chronometrie, Beyer…" at the bottom and enclosed in a Patek Philippe envelope that has the corresponding movement number printed on it. This is as complete as it gets as far as accessories are concerned. According to the Patek Philippe Archives, this ref. 2598 was made in 1960 and sold on March 31, 1960 – the same day we're listing the watch in 2021 – making it exactly 61 years since the original owner walked out of Beyer with this great Calatrava. On this watch, the yellow gold case and applied case-matching hour markers are both crisp and stunning, even after 61 years of faithful duty. The dial has taken on a killer creamy tone, and the printing is just stunning. Beyer's choice of placement on this watch is ingeniously subtle, just above the sub-seconds register and not disrupting the Patek branding at 12 o'clock. The movement is Côtes de Genève finished, in quintessential Patek Philippe fashion. The numbers "027" are stamped on the caseback under where it snaps on, corresponding to the last three digits of the case number. We paired this Calatrava with our Sedona Strap in Black; a classic leather strap for this classic Patek Philippe. In addition, the bit of texture to the Sedona adds a nice layer of dimension that works well here. The hallmarks are still clearly visible on the rear of the seven o'clock lug and under the caseback snap notch. There are some signs of the case being opened near nine o'clock. The dial is in good condition with light patina. The hard enamel signature and small seconds register is well-preserved, raised, and in good condition.
