Debuting in 1997, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut was released to engage with a new kind of clientele - a younger, sportier and trendier watch collector that was newly minted on the back of the dot.com stock market explosion. Released under the same premise as the Nautilus when it was released in 1976 – a trendy watch for a new clientele, the Aquanaut raised suspicions from Patek’s traditional collectors with its position as the first Patek to feature a rubber strap – something collectors saw as a cheap design option at the time. Launched in 2019 as part of Patek Philippe’s collection of six Singapore-exclusive models, the Aquanaut ref. 5167A Singapore Edition celebrated the 200th anniversary of Singapore’s founding in an understated yet immediately obvious manner that collectors appreciate. Featuring a black dial that only differs from the standard ref. 5167A dial through its subtle red accents along its chapter ring and its red seconds hand, the ref. 5167A Singapore Edition is the very embodiment of thoughtful execution. On top of those red accents, it also sits on a red version of the Aquanaut’s composite strap and it features an engraved sapphire crystal caseback that reads “Patek Philippe Singapore 2019” as the cherry on top. Launched as a limited edition of just 500 pieces, this is as rare and sought-after as the Aquanaut gets.
THE DIAL The ref. 5167A's sleek black dial features an engraved crosshatch pattern that flows onto the tropical rubber strap, giving the Aquanaut an entirely integrated aesthetic. Offered as a limited edition, the Singapore edition ref. 5167A-012's dial swaps the Aquanaut's white chapter ring and seconds hand for red, which add a bright pop of color to the watch.
THE CONSTRUCTION With its punchy red dial accents and red rubber strap, the Singapore edition ref. 5167A carries a considerably more impressive presence on the wrist when compared to its black and white sibling.
