Grand Complication of 18k white gold, ref. 5270G-001. Mechanical chronograph movement with manual winding, day, date, month, leap year, and moon phase indications, cal. CH 29‑535 PS Q. 2014. Patek Philippe alligator strap with Patek Philippe folding clasp of 18k white gold. Ø 41 mm., The intricate combination of a perpetual calendar coupled with a chronograph rhymes with Patek Philippe. Ever since the introduction of the first such watch, the ref. 1518, Patek Philippe has had one in their collection. Some of the maison’s most collectible references are 1518, 2499, 3970 and 5970 – all of which are perpetual calendar chronograph watches. These watches often make the covers of auction catalogues and books on the history of horology., This particular example, the ref. 5270G, stands out from earlier models in several ways. Most importantly, it is the first of its kind with an in-house manufactured perpetual calendar chronograph movement. Until now, Patek Philippe has relied on Lemania-based movements, as these are of incredibly high quality and can be visually updated to meet the standards of the company. But why not make it from scratch yourself? The caliber CH 29–535 PS was introduced in 2011 – 70 years after the introduction of the ref. 1518 – and has been part of their collection ever since., The ref. 5270 also differentiates itself from earlier editions by removing the 24 hour and leap year indicators from the sub-dials and adding them to small apertures on either side of the moon phase indicator at six o’clock. This lightens the dial and makes it more easily readable. This way of delivering information was first seen in their ref. 3450 in the early 1980s., It is the largest perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch from Patek Philippe to date, measuring 41 mm. However, due to their new movement, the thickness has been reduced by 0.6 mm compared to that of ref. 5970. It feels big but definitely not bulky – the proportions are just right. And with the amount of information that the watch delivers to its wearer, the watch simply needs a certain size., This is a worthy update to the classic Patek Philippe grand complication watch and is a grail watch for many Patek Philippe collectors. And that is so for a reason., Accompanied by Patek Philippe box, manual, stylus, closed caseback of 18k white gold (unused), various documents and certificate from 2014., This lot is subject to CITES-appendix II and requires a CITES export permit in order to be exported from Denmark to a country outside the EU.
