Adored by esteemed collectors, minute repeating timepieces are among the most complex complications to execute flawlessly. The mechanism was first developed by Daniel Quare in 1680, and the use of bells and sound to mark time has long been a part of history. Before electricity, the minute repeater enabled users to tell time in the dark.
In 2012, Patek Philippe released the minute repeating perpetual calendar ref. 5213G. This combination of a minute repeater and perpetual calendar echoes previous Patek Philippe grail references such as the ref. 5074 and 5013. While the references share this complex complication, the perpetual calendar iterations differ significantly: the 5074 features a classic three-subdial layout, whereas the 5013 employs a more sophisticated retrograde date, which has always been a fan favorite for this reason. The predecessor ref. 5013 also boasts an intriguing tonneau shape, reflecting an Art Deco influence, while the present ref. 5213G adopts a more traditional round shape with a very rare officer-style case and a hinged caseback.
The ref. 5213 epitomizes the quality of traditional Swiss watchmaking craftsmanship that Patek Philippe embodies in all its timepieces. Encased in an elegant 40.6mm diameter, it features a beautifully silvery white dial adorned with applied white gold Breguet numerals, achieving perfect symmetry with apertures for the day, month, and leap year. A slider on the left side of the caseband activates the minute repeater, allowing the wearer to experience its exquisite chime. When the hinged caseback is opened, the movement is revealed, showcasing the intimate striking of hammers against the gong that rims the circumference of the inner case.
The present example is preserved in excellent overall condition with very little wear, fresh to the market and complete with its full set of accessories. Exclusively produced in white gold, this reference's chime is one of the most desirable that collectors will ever encounter, featuring an elegant and pure pitch with generous volume. With fewer than 10 examples having ever appeared at auction, this horological treasure is sure to impress even the most discerning collectors of fine timepieces.
