This particular example is a very early 2nd series, distinguished by the hallmarks present on the caseback proving to be one of the rarest 3970 variations in the entire run. These pieces were produced in very small numbers prior to the later examples with "big hallmarks" present on the lugs, and after the "transitional" pieces between the 1st and 2nd series. Introduced in the late 1980s, the 3970 series succeeded the storied 2499 and is revered for its harmonious proportions and technical sophistication. Encased in 18k yellow gold, the 36mm case houses the esteemed manual-wind caliber 27-70Q, based on a Lemania ébauche expertly reworked by Patek Philippe to the highest Geneva standards. The case on this example remains incredibly we ll-preserved and likely unpolished, with a rainbow patina on the right side. The opaline silver dial is balanced and elegant, featuring recessed subdials and a four-register layout that showcases the full perpetual calendar with moonphase.
