This Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 2457 represents a significant chapter in Swiss watchmaking history. Produced from 1949 to the early 1960’s , this reference exemplifies the Calatrava line introduced in 1932 and is considered to be the line-up to the original and iconic ref. 96, of which it retains the quintessential coin-edge case, a very similar size, and the clean and refined dial design.
Production estimates suggest only a few hundred examples were manufactured, making this a scarce timepiece within Patek Philippe's portfolio. The case measures 30.5mm excluding the original crown, is made from 18kt gold with the characteristic Calatrava design elements including straight lugs and the coin-edge bezel. The case has the characteristic pressure-locked, domed caseback, to accomodate Cal. 27SC central seconds higher profile, it is correctly signed and numbered and it is in an excellent condition with only very light traces of use.
The plexiglass is pristine and this watch maintains its original proportions consistent with mid- century formal watch standards. This Calatrava is fitted with its original un-eraseable silvered dial with the prestigious double signature of Patek Philippe and Gubelin, the renowned Swiss retailer. The dial has applied gold hour markers with the minutes and seconds markers precisely printed on the outer track. The dial has almost no time patina preserving excellent legibility and intact printing, its has no oxidations, stains or discolorations.
At its core operates the Caliber 27SC movement, a manually wound mechanism introduced in 1949, marking a significant advancement in the brand's horological developments. The designation 27SC denotes a movement diameter of 27 millimeters with "SC" referring to "seconde centrale," indicating the central seconds feature. This caliber was among Patek Philippe's early movements to incorporate a directly driven central seconds hand, enhancing timekeeping precision and readability.
The Caliber 27SC works at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz) and has 18 jewels, a straight-line lever escapement, and Gyromax balance with its distinctive adjustable weights—a Patek Philippe innovation.
