It is a model conceived in the immediate post-war years, a period of aesthetic and technical revival, and is still considered one of the Maison’s most successful creations. The element that immediately draws attention is the case, made by the renowned case manufacturer Vichet, one of Patek Philippe’s most refined and important collaborators in the mid-20th century. Today, Vichet cases are highly sought after by collectors, recognizable for their proportions and the sculptural care given to every detail. The most iconic feature of the Ref. 2431 is the shape of the lugs: the famous “Flame Lugs,” so named for their slender, flame-like profile. The result is a bold yet harmonious design, seamlessly integrated into the case with a rare balance for the period. It is precisely the design of these lugs that makes the Ref. 2431 one of the most attractive and desirable Calatrava models ever produced. The impeccable condition of this case, never polished and still showing perfectly crisp hallmarks, further enhances its sinuous and elegant lines. What makes this example even more special is the dial: preserved in excellent condition, it features the exceptionally rare double signature “Gobbi, Milano” above the subsidiary seconds at six o’clock. Gobbi, the historic Patek Philippe retailer in Milan, was already a reference point for fine watchmaking, and the presence of its signature adds extraordinary historical and collectible value. Altogether, this Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 2431 signed Gobbi Milano represents a masterpiece of design and history: a watch that embodies the elegance of its era, the craftsmanship of the finest case makers, and the absolute rarity of double signatures.
