• Minute-repeater with Westminster chime by four hammers on four steel gongs (activated by the slide located on the case-band at 8 o’clock)
• Diurnal (day-time) and nocturnal (night-time) hours with a 24-hour (AM-PM) scale (auxiliary dial at 2 o’clock with central hour index)
• Two-time zones (same central hour index independently adjustable by the rectangular push-piece located on the case-band at 2 o’clock) Case: three-piece, polished, sapphire-crystal case-back screwed by six screws, cabochon sapphire-set winding-crown. Dial: silver colour outer ring, with black painted dots; blued steel “Parmigiani” hands. Parmigiani, Fleurier (Val-de-Travers, Canton de Neuchâtel) Parmigiani Fleurier was founded in 1996 by Michel Parmigiani (b.1950), a talented watch and clock restorer, with financial support from the Sandoz Foundation. The timepiece presented here is one of the most complicated watches from the brand’s early period. At that time, Parmigiani Fleurier produced highly complex watches on special request, generally one-off pieces, many of which are included in the “Tecnica” series. -- The Westminster Chimes The Westminster chimes are more correctly called the Cambridge Chimes. They first appeared in 1793 at St. Mary’s Church, Cambridge. They were written by Rev Dr. Joseph Jowett and Dr. John Randall, working with undergraduate William Crotch (later first Principal of the Royal Academy of Music) and were adopted by Lord Grimthorpe, designer of the great “Big Ben” clock for the Palace of Westminster. The chimes are based on four notes from Handel’s Messiah and are known locally in Cambridge as “Jowett’s Jig”.
