The Panerai Luminor Marina DMLS 44 PAM01662 is one of two “Prima Assoluta” releases of the brand, meaning the world premier of DMLS titanium combined with Carbotech. The case is formed 30 microns at a time - DMLS titanium combines the lightness of the metal with newfound levels of resilience. Like anything layered, DMLS titanium is supposed to be tougher than the industry standard grade 5 titanium. Speaking of layers: Carbotech is a multi-layer carbon composite material that Panerai has been using for its cases and bezels in recent years. This time around, the bezel, crown, and lever are crafted from Carbotech, driving this monochrome, yet high-tech, look home. Sandwiched between a titanium caseback and anthracite dial is Panerai Caliber P.9010, Panerai’s proprietary caliber that combines automatic winding with two barrels and three days of power reserve. Finished with a matte grey sandwich dial over grey Super-LumiNova, the DMLS uses Panerai's three-day P.9010 movement. Automatically wound and ticking at 4Hz, the P.9010 offers a date display at three o'clock and the expected small seconds display next to the nine o'clock marker. It's rhodium plated and it's constructed with twin barrels, 31 jewels, 200 components, 13¾ lignes, twin spring barrels mounted in series wound by an oscillating weight that operates in both directions, a monometallic Glucydur balance that's adjusted for heat, cold, isochronism, and 5 positions, a stop-seconds function for precision time setting, and an Incabloc anti-shock device. It includes a balance wheel with adjusting screws, a bidirectional rotor, and a stop seconds device for precision time setting. The mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz). Panerai has a long history of innovation in watchmaking, from the namesake luminescent material developed for its 'Luminor' line to the fact it pioneered the world’s first-ever 'tool diving watch' for military professionals. Powered by an in-house P.9010 automatic movement with a three-day power reserve, it has a titanium and Carbotech™ case that's formed 30 microns at a time in a Direct Metal Laser Sintering process, more commonly used to make aerospace parts.
