The Panerai Luminor 1950 has its roots in the mid-20th century, originally developed for the Italian Navy’s elite frogmen. Introduced as an evolution of the earlier Radiomir model, the Luminor 1950 featured a distinctive crown-protecting bridge and robust case design, improving water resistance and durability. Its name reflects the use of “Luminor,” a safer, tritium-based luminescent substance introduced in 1949 to replace the more hazardous radium-based Radiomir. Though originally a military tool, the Luminor 1950 gained iconic status in the civilian market after Panerai’s transition to a luxury watchmaker in the 1990s. This version of the Luminor 1950 Tuttonero, reference PAM00438 was produced from 2012 until 2018, and comes set in a matte black ceramic 44mm cushion-shaped case with matching fixed bezel. its clean black sandwich dial features recessed gilt luminous Arab numerals with matching hands and the classic date aperture at 3 o`clock. These details are protected by a domed sapphire crystal and powered bythe automatic calibre P.9001/B movement, visible through the an exhibition caseback. It`s 10atm (100m/330ft) water resistance is thanks to its iconic crown lock, with the watch completed by a matching matte black ceramic bracelet with dual folding butterfly clasp.
