Otsuka Lotec No. 6 No.6

Description

[NO RESERVE] ŌTSUKA LŌTEC | NO.6, A RARE BRAND NEW STAINLESS STEEL WRISTWATCH WITH RETROGRADE HOURS AND MINUTES, CIRCA 2026

The Ōtsuka Lōtec No.6 is widely regarded as one of the most intriguing—and hardest to obtain—creations in contemporary independent watchmaking. Built by self-taught artisan Jiro Katayama in his workshop in Toshima, Tokyo, this 42.6mm stainless steel watch transforms the look of classic analog gauges into a uniquely Japanese design. Its sensu fan shaped retrograde display features coaxial retrograde hour and minute hands that sweep across the lower half of the dial before instantly snapping back, complemented by a central rotating seconds disc and a useful date aperture. Beneath the surface, a customized Miyota 9015 automatic movement paired with Katayama's own retrograde mechanism provides slim proportions (11.8mm), crisp finishing, and robust sapphire crystal protection in the latest iteration. The scarcity of the No.6 is what elevates it to near legendary status. Production numbers remain extremely limited—traditionally only a few dozen watches per year—even after Katayama increased output with occasional assistance from fellow independent makers such as Hajime Asaoka. Distribution is restricted as well: pieces are released exclusively through infrequent lottery sales that require a Japanese address and credit card, turning ownership into a rare achievement rather than a simple transaction. Winner of the 2024 GPHG Challenge Prize for watches under CHF 3,000, the No.6 embodies Katayama's signature blend of inventive "low tech" engineering, distinctive mechanical character, and purposeful inaccessibility. For collectors who value originality above ease of purchase, it remains a true holy grail.
