The Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” Limited Edition, unveiled at Baselworld 2015, celebrates the watchmaker’s critical role in the historic Apollo 13 mission. Limited to 1,970 pieces, corresponding to the year of the mission, it sold out on the first day and remains highly coveted on the secondary market. The Speedmaster, introduced in 1957, has been NASA’s official chronograph since 1965, earning the nickname “Moonwatch” after its use on all six lunar landings.
Apollo 13’s objective was to perform a precision lunar landing and systematic exploration. However, an oxygen tank explosion derailed the mission, leaving the crew reliant on ingenuity and limited onboard resources to return to Earth. Commander Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise depended on Swigert’s Omega Speedmaster to time critical rocket burns that ensured a safe re-entry trajectory.
Omega was awarded NASA’s prestigious Silver Snoopy Award in 1970 for its contributions to mission success and astronaut safety. The award features a sterling silver Snoopy pin, symbolizing excellence, flown during a NASA mission. Snoopy, a NASA mascot since Apollo 10, embodies vigilance and mission safety, further linking the Speedmaster to the Apollo program’s legacy.
The commemorative watch features the phrase “WHAT COULD YOU DO IN 14 SECONDS?” on the dial, referencing the precise timing Swigert performed during the mission. The 9 o’clock subdial shows Snoopy dreaming “FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION,” while the caseback displays a sterling silver Snoopy floating in a deep blue enamel night sky, symbolizing Omega’s celestial legacy.
