This present example is from the post-landing group, fitted with the first and very desirable caseback stating ‘The first watch worn on the Moon’. Given that the legendary status of the Speedmaster was originally very much defined by being the first watch worn on the moon, this is one of the earliest examples made after this historical event. Interestingly, whilst the Apollo XI mission took place in 1969, some may ask why watches made in 1971 were only sold and delivered in late 1972 or onwards. This is because Omega had to wait for approval from NASA before being allowed to state ‘FLIGHT-QUALIFIED BY NASA FOR ALL MANNED MISSIONS’. Presented in good, original condition, this is a rare opportunity to acquire an honest example of an important reference from Omega’s legendary model. There are two key differences within the Omega Speedmaster Reference 145.022-69: one part made pre- moon landing and the others post-moon landing.
