The brand became especially notable for supplying watches to military forces during both World Wars (amongst a stunning type XX chronograph for aviation), solidifying its legacy in the history of horology as a maker of dependable, performance-driven instruments. Offered here is a 1973 Mathey-Tissot ‘exotic’ tropical dial chronograph accompanied by its original box, sales tag, blank guarantee, booklet and unworn steel bracelet. Acquired from a U.S. lady who inherited the watch from her father. He had purchased it in New York City and kept it in a drawer for the past 50 years. In other words; a full set ‘New Old Stock’ example, and we genuinely think this is the only one that survived in unworn condition in the entire world. The dial is the highlight, featuring an “exotic” layout with a rare combination of colors and design that immediately draws the eye. Over time, it has developed a subtle tropical dark brown hue visible in sunlight, a signature trait for this reference that adds depth and character. Three years ago, we sold a similar example with a caramel-toned dial, showing how these subtle variations make each piece unique. The untouched condition preserves the crispness of the printing and the interplay of the subdials against that dark brown tropical background. Its sharp case lines and flawless original finishes are nothing short of how it ones left the Mathey-Tissot store in December 1973. The contrasting tones and textures create a dynamic yet balanced appearance that appeals to collectors who value both rarity and design. This watch exemplifies Mathey-Tissot’s approach in the 1970s, blending technical detail with aesthetic sophistication. Full original packaging underscores its exceptional preservation, making it exceedingly rare in today’s market. Why it stands out: - Unworn condition. - Full set. - Tropical brown dial. - Astounding ‘Exotic’ dial design. What you should know: - Service history unknown (working flawlessly). General information: There’s little to comment on regarding its condition — the watch is flawless. The subtle brown hue becomes more pronounced under certain lighting. The certificate was never officially filled out (something we see more often), though there is a handwritten pencil note on the front reading “DEC 1973 in NYC,” written by the original owner. The Mathey-Tissot engraved screw-down case back bears the serial number 333.xxx. Inside, the Valjoux 726 column-wheel movement remains in immaculate condition, keeping accurate time with all chronograph functions operating perfectly. Case dimension: 40mm. Wrist circumference: 19 Centimeters. ================ Do not hesitate to reach out for more information or additional pictures. Thank you for your interest.
