Coming from an Alsatian watchmaking family, his father was a seller of watchmaking supplies. He founded a watchmaking workshop in 1867 which quickly evolved thanks to his hard work, innovative aesthetic vision, and determined character. He was the originator of the first phosphorescent dials after requesting Pierre and Marie Curie to find a material that would allow reading the time in the dark. He therefore was responsible for the 1898 discovery of this material, radium.
