The company was founded in 1841 by Julien Bourquin in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. Originally, Leonidas specialized in the production of pocket watches before later expanding into the manufacture of wristwatches. In the 1930s Leonidas began to focus on chronographs. Chronographs are watches with additional functions that allow to measure time intervals. These specialized watches were especially popular in the sports world, as they made it possible to record precise times. During World War II, Leonidas was one of the manufacturers of military wristwatches for the British forces. The brand also had a close relationship with Heuer (now part of tag Heuer), another renowned Swiss watchmaker. In the 1960s, Leonidas and Heuer merged to form "Heuer-Leonidas sa" to jointly produce high-quality chronographs. After a few years of collaboration, the Leonidas brand later declined in the 1970s for various reasons and eventually disappeared from the market. Today, Leonidas chronographs are coveted collector's items, valued for their craftsmanship and historical significance.
