Laurent Ferrier, Mechanical Perfection Laurent Ferrier is a luxury Swiss watch manufacturer based in Geneva, founded by Laurent Ferrier himself, a watchmaker born in 1946 in Geneva. Laurent Ferrier comes from a long line of passionate watchmakers. It was in this context that he grew up, surrounded by his maternal and paternal grandfathers who were also watchmakers. The family apartment is located above his father’s workshop; to access it, the child crosses the shop, passing the latter at his bench, surrounded by the treasures he is repairing. Young Laurent’s education pushed him to become a watch enthusiast. He studied watchmaking at the Ecole d’Horlogerie de Genève (Horological School of Geneva). He graduated in 1968 and began his career working in the movement-prototype department of Patek Philippe, where he gained valuable experience and honed his skills in creating high-end timepieces. For more than 37 years, he held various key positions within the famous Genevan company, including that of technical director and head of creation. Laurent Ferrier would later admit that it was more out of concern for family tradition than out of real passion that he got into watchmaking at this time. The automobile, such is the real passion of the young man. When he’s not working, Ferrier drives race cars. Although an amateur, he competed with professional drivers and participated seven times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 1970s and 1980s. It turns out that one of his racing teammates is another amateur, a French entrepreneur named François Servanin. In 1979, the team won a triumph at Le Mans: it finished in third place (just behind Paul Newman’s team). To celebrate the event, Ferrier gives Servanin a “Nautilus”. The gift gives the latter an idea; that of launching their own watch brand. Ferrier knows high-end watches. Servanin knows the ins and outs of business. The two men, who have remained friends, bring up this crazy idea from time to time without following up. Then one day in 2008, Ferrier agreed to embark on the adventure. He has carte blanche to do whatever he wants. In 2010, the eponymous brand was officially launched, with the aim of creating traditional “Haute Horlogerie” watches with an emphasis on craftsmanship and technical excellence. With the help of his son, Christian Ferrier, and his friend François Servanin, he launched his first creation, the “Tourbillon Classique Double Spiral”, immediately rewarded with the men’s watch prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) in 2010 It is a tourbillon with two hairsprings, called the “Straumann Double Balance Spring” (named after the inventor of the Nivarox hairspring alloy, Reinhold Straumann).
