The motivation behind creating this new calendar watch was to improve the date window. Previously, the date disc rotated deep beneath the surface, making it difficult to read. While it featured a beautifully polished dial, but in order to achieve that gloss, the month and day displays had to be attached separately from the back of the dial, which in turn made the dial considerably thick. With this new Grand Jubilee Calendar, I've created a circular recess around the date window itself, and then opened the date window inside that recess. This approach effectively makes the dial look thinner. At the same time, the dial now features guilloché pattern, which also shapes the recessed areas for the month and day indicators. This results in a well-balanced depth that combines both visual appeal and improved legibility. Beyond this, the watch also introduces a new dressier case design, as well as hands finished in a deep black tone to complement the onyx cabochon." ~ Hajime Asaoka The driving force behind each new creation is the pursuit of greater refinement and perfection. Every Kurono Tokyo watch is the culmination of countless small improvements coming together in harmony.” ~ Hajime Asaoka VERTICAL GUILLOCHE The vertical strakes are a detail that Hajime Asaoka has pursued since his very first tourbillon, and in the Grand Jubilee Calendar, they are expressed subtly through guilloché. ONYX CABOCHON AND ONYX-LIKE BLACK HANDS To mark Hajime Asaoka’s 60th Diamond Jubilee, a natural black onyx cabochon adorns the watch’s crown. This time, the hands have also been finished in the same black, reflecting Asaoka’s attention to detail. Black is not a single uniform color but has many shades; achieving hands with the deep, onyx-like black required considerable trial and error.
