Kurono Bunkyo Tokyo Grand Hagane Founded in 2018 as a means for legendary Japanese watchmaker Hajime Asaoka to create serial production pieces, Kurono Tokyo stands as one of the most exciting microbrands in today's watchmaking industry. With Hajime's reputation as an exceptional watchmaker secured from decades of recognition for designing one-off timepieces in close collaboration with his clients, it was never in doubt that his serial production brand would take off. Offered here we have Kurono’s Grand Hagane, a timepiece that features a 37mm stainless steel case with an entirely polished surface, which really showcases the Grand Hagane’s Urushi lacquered dial. Made from the filtered sap of the Japanese rhus vernicifera tree, this lacquer is then hand polished so as to allow the dial’s base metal to show from underneath the brown color of the dial, creating a “Tamahagane" pattern, which is what was also found on Japanese katana blades. Atop its hand-polished finish, the Grand Hagane then features Koji numerals native to Eastern Japan and serve as the cherry on top of this stunningly well-made artisanal dial.
THE DIAL Featuring an Urushi lacquer dial finish that has been hand polished to reveal the "Tamahagane" pattern on the base metal underneath it, the Grand Hagane's dial sports a vibrant brown color that allows its white concentric Koji numerals to really pop.
THE CONSTRUCTION A tasteful design with its 37mm stainless steel case, the Grand Hagane is an easy watch to wear, with its polished surfaces allowing its dial to take center stage - as it deserves.
