The Watch Here we have an exquisite and rare 2000s JLC Master Control Perpetual Calendar 140.3.80. Its 37mm 18ct White Gold round case is only 10mm thick, giving it an elegance when worn. Finely bevelled lugs and a lug-to-lug length of 43mm ensure a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side, there is a signed crown. Its polished bezel holds a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The sunray brushed silver dial has an outer minute track with lumed pips surrounding arrowhead indexes, expertly faceted and an applied six marking the hours. At noon, we have a month register with a year window; at 3 o’clock, a day register; at 6 o’clock, a moonphase, and at 9 o’clock, a date register, each with a delicate blued hand. In the centre, an aperture is indicated in white when it is safe to adjust the perpetual calendar, and red when not between (10 pm -> 3 am). Skeletonised Dauphine's hands are complemented with a blued steel centre seconds hand, adding a sophisticated pop of colour to this classic dial. On the reverse, a screwed-down case back with the details of the watch engraved around its edge and Master Control JL embossed in the centre, inside an automatic JLC Cal. 889/440/2, 50 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. IWC Head Watchmaker Mr Kurt Klaus designed this perpetual calendar module with an ingenious synchronisation of the calendar using a single pusher at 8 o’clock. The movement is certified ‘Master Control 1000 Hours’, meaning the watch is tried and tested in its case for 1000 hours, almost 6 weeks, surpassing COSC testing. It comes paired with its original 19mm JLC leather strap with a signed 18ct White Gold deployant buckle. This watch is sold with a JLC Service box and 2024 JLC Service paperwork.
Personal Note There is something undeniably incredible about these JLC Master Control Perpetual Calendars, especially this reference 140.3.80 in 18ct white gold featuring the wonderful hunter case back, adding more gold and giving you the ability to view the movement. This reference comes in an impressive 37mm case, making it perfect for any wrist size and surprisingly compact considering the complication involved in the watch. Coming fresh from a 2024 JLC service, the watch is running beautifully, and the ease that this calibre has when setting the perpetual calendar, thanks to the one pusher progressing everything together, makes it the perfect perpetual calendar to own. I would not hesitate to book an appointment to see this one in the gold for yourself, but be warned, you may well walk out with it on your wrist!
The Brand Antoine LeCoultre founded LeCoultre in 1833 in the small village of Le Sentier, Switzerland. By 1866, LeCoultre’s workshop had grown from home-run manufacturers spread across Switzerland to installing modern steam-driven machines to power the tools of all of the watchmakers, moving them from their homes and bringing them together in one central unit. Now named LeCoultre & Cie, the company became the very first manufacturer in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. Antoine and his son Elie LeCoultre employed more than 500 watchmakers in-house. In 1903, Edmond Jaeger, a watchmaker in Paris making watches for the French Navy, challenged the Swiss manufacturers to produce an ultrathin movement. Jacques-David LeCoultre, Elie’s son, rose to the challenge and created the world’s thinnest pocket watch, equipped with the LeCoultre 146 calibre, measuring just 1.38 mm thick.
Over the following years, Jaeger and LeCoultre kept in touch, building a strong friendship, and in 1937, Jaeger-LeCoultre was founded. In 2013, they celebrated their 180th Anniversary. Creating iconic timepieces like the Reverso wristwatch and the brilliantly engineered Atmos clock. During the war years, the Mark VII pilot watches of the 1940s were so accurate that the Royal Air Force used them as aerial navigation instruments; later, they created the first automatic watch to house a power-reserve indicator in 1948 that was used by the US Army Air Corps. Jaeger-LeCoultre has developed and revolutionised the watch industry like no other manufacturer. Since 2000, they have been a fully owned subsidiary of the Swiss luxury group Richemont. This group includes Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, IWC Schaffhausen, Panerai, Piaget, Vacheron Constantin, Montblanc, Dunhill and Chloé.
