For decades, the Portugieser Chronograph has occupied a unique place in fine watchmaking: a serious, in-house Swiss chronograph with the soul of a gentleman's dress watch and the technical credentials of a tool watch. It is, by any measure, one of the great watch designs of the 20th century — and this example in its striking burgundy dial configuration is among the most elegant expressions of the model. The Watch The thin bezel gives the impression of wearing a significantly larger timepiece than the 41mm case actually is — it wears with commanding presence without ever feeling heavy. The clear, uncluttered dial features applied Arabic numerals and slender Feuille hands in rhodium-plated steel, while the inner réhaut is printed with a quarter-second scale — a nod to the Portugieser's origins as a precision nautical instrument for the wrist. The rich burgundy dial gives this particular reference a warmth and depth that makes it stand apart from the more common silver and blue variants. At the heart of the watch beats IWC's in-house manufactured Calibre 69355 — an automatic self-winding movement with 46 hours of power reserve, 27 jewels, and Côtes de Genève and perlage finishing throughout. The column-wheel chronograph mechanism is visible through the sapphire display caseback — a genuinely beautiful thing to look at, and a detail that sets this generation of the Portugieser apart from its predecessors.
