Origins — Heuer before the Carrera To understand this watch, we have to go back before racing watches, before marketing, before icons. The brand Heuer in the 1930s–1950s was: A technical instrument maker Known for stopwatches and timing devices Supplying sports, aviation, and industry Wrist chronographs like this one were not “luxury” items yet. They were tools for professionals The 404 series — a transitional generation The Ref. 404 belongs to a family of chronographs produced in the Late 1940s – early 1950s This period is crucial because: Watches are moving from military utility → civilian elegance, Design becomes more refined, Cases become slimmer and more wearable The present example sits exactly at that turning point Design philosophy — before modern minimalism Unlike the later Carrera (1963), which was designed with radical clarity, the 404N still reflects: Classic chronograph layout Subtle decorative touches Elegant proportions Finding one in top condition is genuinely uncommon, therefore this example stands as an exceptional survivor of the era The Heuer Ref. 404N is a pre-Carrera chronograph from the post-war transition era, representing the moment when tool watches began evolving into the refined, iconic designs that would define modern horology. Why we like it: Dates back from the late 1940s–1950s golden era of mechanical chronographs Rarer and more “connoisseur-level” than a Carrera Perfect untouched collector condition Amazing. patina Black untouched dial with luminous dauphine hands & Clean 2-register layout. Black dials were: More technical, Harder to produce cleanly, Less common ✅ Authenticity Guaranteed — Certified by Swiss experts ✅ Trusted Provenance ✅ Secure and encrypted payments with our leading Swiss partner Worldline
