Unlike Rolex, known for its slow-and-steady design evolution (a 6265 from 1988 and a 6239 from 1963 are, broadly speaking, the same watch), Heuer introduced far greater variation within the Carrera line, each with distinct design elements. While Rolex focused on improving the waterproofness and robustness of the Daytona, Heuer placed greater emphasis on legibility and functionality when refining the Carrera. When launched in 1963, the Carrera was offered in two main forms: the Carrera 12, featuring three sub-dials including a 12-hour register (hence the name), and the Carrera 45, with two sub-dials and a 45-minute counter. These were later followed by their respective “Dato” versions, before the introduction of the Carrera 30 in 1970. This early reference 3647N has survived in superb condition. Notably, it features the desirable “T” above “Swiss” dial marking and is the third such example we have handled. Interestingly, the two prior examples we’ve seen had hands of a matching tone—more zinc sulphide in appearance—while the dial markers had aged to a creamy hue. On this example, the dial remains in exceptionally good condition and pairs beautifully with the unpolished case. The movement has been checked over and regulated and is currently running at –5 s/day, with an amplitude of 290° and a beat error of 0.4 ms. Viewing is available by appointment.
