Hamilton Watch Company was established in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, initially producing precision movements for the American railroad network, a sector in which the company held over 56% of the market. The transition to wristwatches began in 1917; by the mid-1920s, Hamilton’s cushion-form strap watches had become the defining expression of its civilian wristwatch production. The Cushion Engraved, first generation Type A, was produced exclusively in 1926. Of the 352 pieces made with calibre 986A, 342 were cased in 14-karat white gold, making this among the most limited variants of the entire Cushion series. The case is made of 14-karat white gold, measuring 27.8 mm in diameter excluding the crown, and is in very good condition with only light traces of use. The caseback locks firmly onto the case and carries the correct serial numbers and manufacturer’s markings. The mineral crystal is in perfect condition. The original silvered radium dial with large Arabic numerals is in good original condition, with a light and even time patina. The radium lume has aged uniformly to a deeper tone, consistent with the age of this timepiece. Inside beats the calibre 986A, a 6/0-size Hamilton manufacture movement with 17 extra-fine ruby and sapphire jewels, a Breguet hairspring, double roller escapement, sapphire pallets, and a bimetallic compensation balance. Produced between 1922 and 1926, the 986A was manufactured to the same exacting standards Hamilton applied to its railroad-grade movements — adjusted, regulated, and finished to a level that distinguished it from the movements of most American contemporaries. It represents the final iteration of Hamilton’s first wristwatch-grade calibre family before the introduction of the 987 in 1927. This timepiece is fitted with a new vintage leather strap.
