History of Graham Brand Graham is an exclusive brand that originated from the renown watchmaker Georges Graham in 1695 in London. His contributions to watchmaking included the cylinder escapement, the stop-watch, the mercurial pendulum and deadbeat escapement. The Graham brand lived for 300 years then disappeared. The brand was revived in 1995 by a group of Swiss and British watchmakers loyal to the brand. The Chronofighter is unique to Graham and has crown on the left hand side of the case with a trigger switch covering it giving it a highly mechanical appearance. The Chronofighter mechanism was introduced during the 2nd World War so that pilots of the famous Lancaster Bombers could wear the watch on their left wrist over their mitten gloves and still use their thumb to start the stop watch when on their bombing runs. This watch celebrates the Battle of Britain victory which was lead by Royal Air Force Air Vice Marshal Sir Hugh Stuff Dowding whose nickname was “Stuffy”. The round black radiograph print dial represents the map over London with The River Thames shown running as a grey painted curved strip from the 7 o’clock to to the centre then to the 3 o’clock position. The orange flame emblem on the left side minute dial was the emblem found on the Spitfires that served in the squadron that Sir Hugh Stuffy Dowding commanded. It is also interesting to note that the Sir Hugh “Stuffy” Dowding and the founder of the brand Georges Graham are both buried in Westminster Abbey in in London. Purchase and service history This watch was purchased in 2012. As a passionate aficionado of the Graham Watch brand, this watch was worn sparingly for special occasions. The original strap was made of kevlar but was showing signs of wear. In 2018 the original kevlar strap was replaced with an original Graham black canvas red stitched leather strap with a black PVD buckle engraved with “Graham” . The watch was also serviced and valued at this time. The watch has light signs of wear on the casing and some dust trapped on the lever for the stop watch. The Graham Chronofighter is a great ice-breaker at social functions as it is truly unique and a testimony to mechanical watch making. The Chronofighter which are limited editions such as this one hold value well and are sought after by fellow enthusiasts of the brand. Thank you for taking the time to view this listing.
