The term "Tourbillon" is the simplification of "Regulateur à tourbillon", which indicates a particular mechanism, invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet, patented on June 26, 1801. Its purpose is to allow the reduction by compensation of the irregularities of the movement suffered by the watch depending on the position in which it is placed, connected to the action of the Earth's gravity. In short, it consists, in its simplest form, of a cage rotating around a central axis and containing the escapement, the pallet fork and the balance wheel with its hairspring. Thanks to the circular motion, which causes the perpetual movement of the regulating group, the balance wheel behaves as if the watch were rotating along a circumference, that is, cancelling out the advance experienced in one position with the delay experienced in another.
