The inner case has a shuttered winding aperture, stirrup bow, indistinct London hallmarks, case maker's marks IW incuse with star above for John Ward, numbered 5941. The outer case is engraved with a contemporary crest and motto. George Graham (c1674-1751) , clockmaker, inventor and member of the Royal Society, was partner of the influential English clockmaker Thomas Tompion during the last few years of Tompion's life. Graham is credited with the invention of several design improvements to the pendulum clock, the cylinder escapement, the mercury pendulum and also the orrery. He is buried in the same tomb in Westminster Abbey as his friend and mentor Tompion.
