The watch will be shipped with a Sotheby’s branded calf leather strap.When many think of François-Paul Journe they immediately think of the Chronomètre à Résonance, widely regarded as one of the most recognisable and intellectually ambitious watches of modern independent watchmaking. The model was introduced in 2000 following many years of research into the phenomenon of resonance, a principle whereby two oscillators placed in close proximity influence one another and ultimately beat in synchrony. Inspired by the experiments of Antide Janvier and Abraham-Louis Breguet, Journe succeeded in translating this concept into a wristwatch with two independent gear trains regulating two balances mounted side by side. When functioning correctly, the two balances enter into resonance, improving the stability of rate and demonstrating Journe’s fascination with classical chronometry. The present watch, numbered 142/01R, dates to 2001 and belongs to the early generation of Résonance watches fitted with rhodium-plated brass movements. From 2004, the movement were only manufactured in pink gold. Produced during the formative years of the F. P. Journe manufacture, these early examples already display the distinctive architecture and aesthetic that define the reference, including the characteristic twin time displays and symmetrical movement layout visible through the sapphire case back. Accompanied by its warranty card, the present watch represents a well-preserved early example of one of François-Paul Journe’s most celebrated creations.
