Description

1965 Ladies Eterna-Matic KonTiki

This high spec’ and highly original ladies Eterna-Matic KonTiki even has its long Gay Freres bracelet still fitted. Model reference 130FFT. HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH? From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1965. CONDITION Kon-Tiki was a balsa wood raft, but in 1947 Norwegian Thor Hyyerdahl and his crew set out to prove that ancient people could have sailed from South America to Polynesia on such simple craft. After 97 days, they landed in Polynesia, each crew member wearing an Eterna watch. This is how the line of Kontiki watches began, and they can be considered a rival for the Omega Seamaster watches. However this is a higher specification that any ladies Seamaster of this period we have seen. Whereas most ladies watches are basic, this has an automatic, in house movement, and screw down oversized crown to aid water resistance. The crystal has the five ball bearing logo of Eterna in the centre, so it likely the original. The bracelet made by esteemed makers Gay Freres, who were the top bracelet maker and they client list includes some of Switzerland’s most prestigious and well-known brands, such as Rolex, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, and Heuer – just to name a few. Gay Freres were bought by Rolex in 1988, and if this were a men’s watch the bracelet could be worth four figures alone!.
