The Enicar Watch Company was founded in 1913 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, when Ariste Racine—founder of Racine Watch Co.—spelled his surname backward to create a new brand. Enicar quickly became recognized for its high-quality timepieces, a reputation it maintained for over 90 years. In 1914, production ramped up significantly, driven by successful exports to Russia. That same year, Racine was among the first to use radium to make watch hands and dials readable in the dark. Following rapid growth and expansion in the mid-1920s, the company relocated to Lengnau. There, Enicar began producing its own movements, moving away from relying on Adolphe Schild (AS). During this time, Racine focused on manufacturing robust, precise military watches, which soon gained popularity among civilian customers as well. Over the next 15 years, Enicar’s innovations and designs would lead the way in global watchmaking. In the 1950s, the company adopted the slogan: “Precision time in space, on the earth, and over the seas.” Enicar also holds a unique place in exploration history: it was the first watch brand to reach the summit of Mount Everest—not the Rolex Oyster worn by Sir Edmund Hillary on his 1953 expedition.
