The Enicar Sherpa Guide ref. 148-35-01 is an iconic sports / dive timepiece from 1967.
Founded in 1914 by Ariste Racine in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Enicar gained prominence for producing robust and reliable watches, especially during the 1950-60`s.
Like many watch brands of the 1950s, Enicar partnered with expeditions to demonstrate the robustness of its timepieces under extreme conditions. In 1956, the brand supplied Sea Pearl models to a Swiss Himalayan expedition that successfully scaled the peaks of Lhotse (8,516m) and Everest (8,849m).
This remarkable achievement brought significant attention to Enicar and inspired the creation of the Sherpa watch the same year. The collection was named in honor of the Nepalese guides whose expertise is essential in such challenging expeditions and it became iconic for its association with Himalayan expeditions and adventurous spirit.
In 1957, a Sherpa Ultrasonic stopwatch was attached to the hull of the Mayflower II, a faithful replica of the 17th-century English vessel that carried the Pilgrim Fathers to America. After the Mayflower II completed its transatlantic journey, the watch emerged fully functional, earning Enicar further acclaim.
Later that year, the company introduced a new diving model, the Sherpa Dive, a timepiece that would go on to symbolize reliability and endurance.
Over its 30-year production span, the Sherpa line became a cornerstone of Enicar’s catalog, featuring over 100 variations.
