Daniel Roth S247

Description

Daniel Roth Masters Chronograph S247 rare salmon dial

When one thinks of the great independents of today, names like Voutilainen, Dufour and Journe come to mind. In fact, independents are so highly regarded today that it has become commonplace in collecting circles to own at least one watch from an independent brand. But before all this hype, there was Daniel Roth. To add a little context, Daniel Roth was one of the most talented watchmakers of his generation and was responsible for many of the designs you see today but are not aware of. In particular, he was responsible for the stylistic language of the Breguet watches you see today. In the 1960s and 1970s, Breguet had become a below-average watch brand with no future, until it was bought by Chaumet, who brought in Daniel Roth to take over the company. The reference 3130, with its guilloche dial and straight-lugged case, set the tone for Breguet and was part of the Daniel Roth era. In addition, he played an important role in the production of complicated movements for Lemania, which until recently supplied chronograph calibers to companies like Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. After this chapter in Roth's life and in the early 90's, the independent brand "Daniel Roth" began to take shape. There are three distinct periods in the Daniel Roth brand, the initial period when it was truly independent, the middle period when The Hour Glass was a stakeholder, and the final period when Bvlgari took control and Daniel Roth left the company. In 1995, Daniel Roth joined the Hour Glass group and the example you see today is from that period. While all of Daniel Roth's early pieces are considered extremely desirable, there are still some pieces from the Hour Glass period that I find excellent and worthy of inclusion. This Master Chronograph S247 model manages to retain some excellent original Daniel Roth traits that I find desirable, including the classic vertical guilloche dial that recalls his time at Breguet and a beautifully symmetrical design. In the interest of collecting, this example features a very desirable and rare salmon dial and, as many watch collectors know, this color holds a special place because of its striking tone. The overall depth of the dial is further accentuated by the contrasting applied hour ring that completes the elegant look, making this watch a Daniel Roth icon. In addition, this second generation chronograph is equipped with a high quality Zenith El Primero 400 movement, similar to the one used on the Rolex Daytona 16520. It's great to see the brand's early models coming back to the forefront and getting the recognition they have always deserved from the world's leading collectors.
