CONDITION:
The Cartier Santos Galbée XL Ref. 2823 is an iconic timepiece with a rich history tied to Cartier’s pioneering role in the world of wristwatches. Its design and heritage are steeped in horological innovation.
The Origins of the Cartier Santos
The Cartier Santos was first created in 1904 for Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Louis Cartier designed the watch to help Santos-Dumont easily read the time while flying, as pocket watches were impractical in the cockpit. This collaboration resulted in one of the first wristwatches ever made and cemented Cartier’s place in the annals of watchmaking history.
The Santos Galbée Line
The Santos Galbée collection, introduced in the late 1970s / early 80s, modernised the original Santos design. “Galbée,” meaning “curved” in French, refers to the slightly curved case and bracelet, which made the watch more ergonomic and comfortable on the wrist (whereas the similar looking Carée is flat by design).
The Galbée retained the signature Santos features, including the square case, exposed screws on the bezel, and Roman numeral dial, but updated the aesthetics to appeal to contemporary tastes.
The Santos Galbée XL Ref. 2823
Released in the early 2000s, the Santos Galbée XL Ref. 2823 was an evolution of the Santos Galbée, catering to the growing demand for larger wristwatches. Key features include:
Why It’s Special
The Santos Galbée XL Ref. 2823 is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for its balance of modernity and heritage. It offers the unmistakable DNA of the original Santos design while accommodating contemporary preferences for larger watches. Its timeless elegance and versatility make it suitable for both casual and formal wear.
Legacy and Collectibility
Although discontinued and no longer in production, the Ref. 2823 remains a beloved piece in Cartier’s legacy. It represents an era when Cartier refined the Santos line to appeal to modern tastes while preserving its historic charm. For collectors, this model is particularly appealing due to its iconic design, wearability, and the prestige associated with Cartier as a luxury maison.
