Cartier made the case and bracelet out of stainless steel, a real game changer for the House that had only worked with precious metals before this time, later on Cartier also introduced the Santos in 18k gold and named it "Or Massif" which translates to Solid Gold in French. The Cartier Santos Carrée ref. 2964 is an ultra-rare 27 mm case, 2 mm smaller than the 2960. Believed to be the very first Santos Carrée ever produced, it was conceived in this size before evolving into the 29 mm version.
